Classic Luxury Off Roader Mercedes Benz G Class

The 2011 Mercedes Benz G-Class, known as the European Geländewagen, is the carmaker's extreme off roading SUV. Rumor had it that once it was debuted the G-Class would soon be displaced. The vehicle has been on the market since the 1970s, and it has had a number of changes to its engines and transmissions over time. Nevertheless, the body on frame, box like structure has remained. The G-Class has two permutations: the G55 AMG and the G550. The G550 sports a 5.5 Liter, V-8, 382 hp engine coupled with a seven-speed auto tranny. The G55 AMG sports a 5.4 Liter supercharged V-8 motor married to a five-speed auto tranny. Both vehicles are fitted with front/rear/center locking differentials and heavy duty axles. Many car buyers will not use the G-Class for off road excursions. Some car buyers simply appreciate the smooth handling that the G-Class offers. Some improvements can make the G-Class even better though; its military styling is not all appealing and diminishes comfort levels. This SUV is priced from $105,000 and up, so it appeals to an elite class.
The 500-horsepower AMG model is significantly quicker to 60 than its normally aspirated G550 kin, but when it comes to curvy roads, the G-Class handles like a tall, heavy military vehicle. Where it shines is off-road, where a rigid structure, three locking diffs, and two-speed transfer case can get you almost anywhere -- as long as your G-wagen doesn't have the chrome side steps, which can get in the way on rocks.
