This car is designed to be a family favorite. But it would be amazing as well when used by teens. This car will provide a high confidence for the wearer, whoever he is. The brilliant interior may be conservatively styled, but the sheer quality and delightful tactility more than compensate. Add in some technically advanced drivetrains, exemplified by the award-winning twin-charged 118kW 1.4TSI and ultra-refined mechanicals that put many far costlier cars to shame and you have the recipe for World Car of The Year 2009. Although initially controversial, the decision not to completely re-engineer Golf 5 has been mostly justified and money saved on platform and chassis has been well spent. Besides there wasn’t much wrong with the underpinnings in the first place, with the Volksie’s multi-link rear suspension and perfectly judged damper settings granting a ride versus handling compromise that few in the class can match. The only downside is packaging, where the Golf gives away ground to newer opposition with roomier cabins and larger boots. Still, giving up a little practicality for more of the fun-to-drive factor and the brand equity of the VW badge seems an easy trade-off.
